  1. 4-5-94                   V-Fast Modems

  3.      There  is no set standard for V-Fast modems and won't be until  spring
  4. sometime.  Meanwhile Rockwell and others each have come out with their  own
  5. 'standard' for V-Fast. Rockwell based modems should connect at Vfast speeds
  6. to each other. They connect at V-fast speed on normal voice phonelines.  In
  7. fact V-fast is supposed to be better than v32(bis). Use %E1 so your  V-fast
  8. modem  will fall back if the line conditions warrant when  negotiating  the
  9. connection.  So  even between like modems (two Zooms) you may not  see  28K
  10. connections. Using a slower speed may actually inrease throughput on 'poor'
  11. lines.  Forcing  a  higher  connect speed often  causes  throughput  to  be
  12. substantially less than that of the slower connect speed because of  errors
  13. and  repeated blocks. Between unlike modems the highest connect may  be  as
  14. low  as 14,400 (which is the V32bis ITU standard). There will be some  (yet
  15. unknown) charge to upgrade to the ITU v.34 standard.

  17.      You can try using the Fx command to force a higher connect, to see  if
  18. 'line noise' is present.  The Init should be the standard  AT&F&C1&D2  used
  19. by all Zoom modems.  Also try putting %E3 in the init string.
